Nitrogen Dioxide

Nitrogen dioxide sources:

  • Outdoor
    • Automobile exhaust
  • Indoor
    • Gas stoves and ovens
    • Water heaters
    • Fireplaces
    • Skating rinks

Normally indoor levels of nitrogen dioxide are the same as outdoor levels. However, during cooking using gas stoves, indoor levels may be very high if there is no ventilation exhaust in the kitchen.

Nitrogen dioxide health effects:

  • Aggravates asthma
  • Increases frequency of cough and wheezing in women
  • One study has shown that it might increase the risk for asthma in children
